New Workshop: Social Media

April 13, 2010

The birth of social networking and social media has presented an entirely new way to communicate with one another. Since it’s internet-based, it is a phenomenon that allows itself to constantly change and improve. And though it’s a relatively new technology, such a staggering number of people use social media tools that it almost seems alternative to not jump on the bandwagon.

A lot of people and businesses are now using the internet to connect with loyal consumers, other businesses, and old friends. In fact, there are an estimated 400 million people who use Facebook alone, according to Facebook’s official stats, which includes approximately 1/3 of the U.S. population1. This is important to know for those who have an idea, product, brand, show, etc that they seek to promote; the people that you want to reach are very, or extremely, likely to use sites such as Facebook or Twitter. And the best way to reach them is by meeting them where they already are.

These are major reasons why PCTV is offering a workshop about social media entitled Social Media as a Promotional Tool. It is mainly tailored to producers of the station who want to promote their PCTV program, but producers or partners wanting to use the knowledge to promote their non-profit organization are also welcome. In the workshop we will be discussing Twitter, multiple facets of Facebook, and information gathering tools such as RSS, bookmarks, and alerts. In addition to a PowerPoint presentation, workshop participants will receive a hand-out that will include more detailed instructions on how to use the technology that will be taught.

The first workshop will take place at the station next week–Tuesday, April 20 at 6:00pm. There is a $5 fee that will be used to reserve your spot, and the whole session shouldn’t take more than 2 hours. Contact Christie at 412-322-7570 or for more information.
